loopychewDay 23 - Something That Makes You Feel Better
While masturbation is technically a correct answer, I think I'm going to talk about Rock Band instead.
Most anyone who snorts at Rock Band derisively and asks, "why don't you learn to play a REAL guitar/drums/bass instead?" refuses to understand where the appeal lies. It's not just about the instruments, it's about HOW you perform. Rock Band manages to capture that feeling of performing before a live audience pretty astutely, including the clapping and singing along, the general ambiance. It's one thing to play a guitar; it's something completely different to play a guitar in front of an audience. Anyone who doesn't get this has never rehearsed a presentation at home solo, then in front of a couple of friends, then before the class/board/audience, or never drew the connection.
Rock Band is not opinionated in terms of the song you play. It will not call out, "Creed SUCKS!" (Even if they do.) If you do well, you're praised; if not, you're punished. You can always drop a level or choose a different song if you're so inclined. (I'm never inclined to drop a level. If I'm that dour, I'll play a song that's both fun and doesn't require much focus on the notes, like Dirty King or Funk #49.)
The simple fact of the matter is, it's the new version if this. You may be a reasonably decent drummer, but the moment you pop in the disc and start playing, you're not hearing YOUR drumming, you're hearing Neil Peart's drumming, and you can appreciate it a little more by following in his footsteps.
Nobody playing Rock Band goes in expecting to be the next Neil Peart, Jimmy Page, Keith Moon, Keith Richards, or whatever. They just want to temporarily inhabit their world for a bit, then go back to reality. If they want to learn to play guitar, so be it, they will (with Pro Mode upcoming in RB3, Rock Band might help, although I have my reservations ). But like any other game, they're playing this to get away, for a bit of relief.
